"Saloncon," the first Steampunk fashion convention, took place in 2006 and allowed a collection of lively and passionate followers of the Steampunk movement to gather ansd connect with each other, showcasing their incredibly intricate (and often handmade) costumes including clothing, accessories, makeup, and hair. These elements, when applied to fashion, create absolute magic, and it's no wonder to us that this fashion movement has not only gained a cult following but the attention of the mainstream fashion world as well! The juxtaposition of these elements creates a post-apocalyptic feel and a romantic allusion to drama and revolution. Steampunk is often described as a fusion of the old and the new: the tradition of the Victorian age mixed with bold, retro technology. Although the concept of Steampunk had been popularized decades before this, thanks to various other Sci-fi novels, the birth of this label propelled Steampunk's rise into movies, video games, TV shows, and the fashion world! In 1987, author KW Jeter first coined the term “Steampunk” in his novel Morlock Night. Having been officially recognized in the late ‘80s, Steampunk is a fairly new concept and an even newer movement in the fashion world. ![]() You're probably picturing something along the lines of metal, goggles, top hats, and clocks, right? But what is this really all about?Īn imaginative and fantasy-driven combination of Victorian era fashion and elements and materials inspired by the Industrial Revolution, Steampunk fashion is in a league all its own. The steampunk movement and fashion, on its own, remain relatively unchanged even in today’s time, however, it has definitely led to different styles and types, each characterized by something unique altogether.As of now, I’m sure you have a picture in your mind of the general Steampunk aesthetic. The invention of the steam engine during the Industrial Revolution and its loud, complex mechanism also relates to how loud, bold, out-there, and extravagant steampunk fashion is. Moreover, it also has a lot to do with how this aesthetic is a reminiscence or perhaps, the nostalgia of the Industrial Revolution Era. The significance of steam has everything to do with its emergence at a time when technological progress was powered by steam, and not electricity as it is today. It is interesting to note that ‘steam’ is quite integral to the whole idea of the steampunk aesthetic. That is basically how the term was created, but soon enough, it transpired into art and fashion as well, expanding from its literary roots. For many reasons, steampunk fashion can also be referred to as Victorian steampunk, considering how, at its very core, it is heavily inspired by the Victorian era.Īs mentioned earlier, the term ‘steampunk’ was first witnessed in 1987 when American writer Kevin Wayne Jeter wrote a letter to Locus Magazine in which he mentioned the term quite jokingly, primarily to describe his works of Victorian fiction. ![]()
